In line with our vision to democratize startup and investor information, we’re glad to announce that we’ve recently added a large number of India-based as well as India-focused venture capital, angel investment and incubator groups and their investment portfolios to ChubbyBrain. Thanks very much to all of you who’ve helped us compile this information.
You can expect analyses of the Indian venture capital and angel investment markets over time, but here are some early observations.
Our data confirms to some extent what Freeman Murray mentioned to us in our interview about India’s Y Combinator - iAccelerator a few weeks ago. He stated, “Most of the VCs here get into private equity. While there are large numbers of eager first time entrepreneurs. Dealing with them is just too time consuming and too risky for traditional VCs. So, there’s a gaping hole in the venture capital scene in India right now with large numbers of first time entrepreneurs who can’t get funding. ”
We did observe firms who called themselves “venture capital” firms engaging in private equity transactions.
There were also several funds whose activity appears to have altogether stopped or seriously slowed. On the flipside, there appears to be signs of a new angel investment community emerging within India with a couple of fairly active angel groups.
There are also several government-sponsored or government-backed venture outfits including entities from Gujarat, Punjab and Kerala. The success of such public-private partnerships will be interesting to see over time.
And finally, of course, we have VC firms who may not be headquartered in India but who actively invest in the market.
To see the Indian venture capital, angel investment and incubator firms, use the ChubbyBrain investor search and search by country. Some but not all of the portfolios recently added include:
India-based or Venture Capital firms with an India presence
Indian Angel Investors & Incubators
Government-sponsored/backed & Public-Private VC Funds
We look forward to continuing to expand our coverage of India and other international markets. If we have missed a VC or angel investment firm in India, do let us know.
We are also looking for a country/region director to cover India and the South Asian sub-continent so if you’re interested, email us at team(at)chubbybrain(dot)com. It will be a high visibility role so if you are a blogger, technology enthusiast with knowledge of the market and local startup/investor scene, we look forward to hearing from you.
Update: [April 27, 2009] We received a great deal of feedback and help subsequent to this post and as a result, we’ve added 10 additional investors, predominantly venture capital firms with an India presence. Because of this, we’ve also added nearly fifty new India-based startups. Thanks to everyone for the information they provided.
