We recently added over 300 American business incubators and tenant companies to our investor database. Additionally, we presented some national data trends on incubators. We’ll periodically be turning to individual states to take a deeper look at their incubators and portfolio companies.
Today, we are looking at Maine which has 30 well below the national average of 110. This is even though we identified only 1 (Maine Center for Enterprise Development) incubators in the state which is below the national average of 8.3. Of the 30 companies housed currently or in the past within these incubators, 22 were scalable and hence added to ChubbyBrain. (Note: Our focus on ChubbyBrain is primarily on scalable companies so consulting, retail or service companies that may be in these incubators are not included in our database or the remainder of this analysis). This means Maine scalable percentage stands at 73.3% which is much higher than the average of 44% nationally.
As shown in Graph A, the sector breakdown for Maine business incubators shows the Industrial, Consumer Products and Services, and Internet sectors to be leading sectors for incubator tenant companies. The top sector in Maine incubators was Industrial. As can be seen in Graph B, most companies in this sector are working in the Pollution Treatment and Control arena.
Not surprisingly, Graph C shows that most incubator companies in Maine were located in Portland. This makes sense considering Maine Center for Enterprise Development is located in Portland.
