August Capital was founded in 1995 by Dave Marquardt and John Johnston. As of 2010, August Capital's six partners managed $1.3 billion in assets under management and had invested in more than 75 companies across the technology spectrum.

In March 2009, August Capital closed its fifth fund at $650 million, which brought its total capital under management to just under $2 billion. The firm continued to invest in early-stage startups, but also looked for opportunities on the other end of the growth spectrum, including spinoffs, buyouts, and PIPEs.
