Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay, and his wife, Pam, established Omidyar Network based on the belief that every person has the potential to make a difference.

As a philanthropic investment firm, the Omidyar Network makes both investments and grants, identifying likeminded organizations that they support, can help scale, and collaborate with to help realize their full potential. The Omidyar Network's efforts are organized around two investment initiatives: (1) Access to Capital and (2) Media, Markets and Transparency.

Through the first, Access to Capital, the firm works to create economic opportunity for people in emerging markets by opening new doors to financial services and property rights. Their aim through these efforts is to help foster entrepreneurial behavior, economic activity, and job creation.

Since inception, the Omidyar Network has committed $274 million of capital. Of this, $126 million has gone to for-profit investments and $148 million in non-profit grants.
