Size of Venture Capital Market



Since 1970, venture capitalists have invested $456 billion into more than 27,000 companies, according to the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). As can be expected, the amount of VC runs in cycles through distinct technology boom periods, such as:

  • The rise of Silicon Valley in the 1970s
  • The Internet boom 1995-2000



The venture capital industry as one would expect is a much different place in 2010 compared with 1999. In Q2 2010, venture capitalists invested $5.9 billion into 612 companies according to CB Insights.

Venture Capital Industry Today

According to the National Venture Capital Association, venture-backed companies account for 12 million U.S. jobs and 21 percent of U.S. GDP. Per the NVCA, 741 venture capital firms in the United States and they manage approximately $257 billion.
